Overview

Flag: Three diagonal stripes - red, purple, blue. The red represents the freedom those who come here seek. The purple is the passion those who live here hold, while the blue represents liberation and determination to do better. There is also a stylized Wynling in the middle, optionally, to represent the fae-touched nature of Ashfen.
Languages: While most NPCs will speak Common (and Common Sign Language), other common languages spoken in Ashfen are Elvish and Gnomish. Sylvan is what most contracts are written in, alongside spoken in private by most older people.
Government: As a small nation, the fact that Ashfen even seems to have its' own political system may be strange to outsiders, but knowing that the leader hopes to eventually have Ashfen survive by itself in the distant future, it sort of makes sense. It is an autocracy masked as an absolute monarchy. While I do not know what nations are nearby, however, I do know that Ashfen does attempt to keep good relations with them. Even as they shelter known criminals.
One reason that people come to Ashfen, after all, is to escape their own pasts and build something new, like a commune. And this is a fantasy world, so it can work a lot better then IRL.
Leader + Ruling Body: The leader of Ashfen, also the founder of it, is Amice 'Sparrow' Ashfen. She often calls herself the Queen of this nation, and rules it with the kindness you might expect from a Noblebright village/town.
Behind the scenes, it is ruled by Amices' elder sister, Marian Ashfen - who takes her role seriously, and is often consulting the people in a demi-democratic way. Both of the sisters are, actually. It's just that they don't need to follow what they gather.

Fairies are not listed here, since it is rude to ask if somebody is a true faerie or a person!

Naming Conventions: Many of those who have not come to Ashfen from outside use two names - their true name not given to outsiders, and their gifted name, given to them by somebody else to protect them. It is seen as a sign of pride to have many names given. (Briar is not his birth name, for example, but it is one he wears to protect himself. His birth name is Fen.)

However, government records are often signed with true names, since it's an open secret the faerie rules work here - but the faeries in government are under the control of Amice, who will not use these names for harm. Just a bit of chaos.

It is seen as rude to have the same Gifted Name as somebody else. Yes, this does mean people could use names like usernames or Oddly Spelled names. For the comedy.

also thank you fantasynamegenerators :3 These are ones I used for influence for characters. I've noted which races tend to use these names as well.

Name Generators: Dungeons and Dragons/Pathfinder:
  • Fairy
  • - because Obviously.
  • Changeling
  • - Commonly used for the Fae-Touched races.
  • Humans
  • - If in doubt, just use either an Eladrin name or a Human Name.
  • Eladrin
  • - Not only used for Eladrin, but some of the most common names.
  • Satyr
  • - For hooved guys, alongside Firbolg, Goliath and Tiefling.
  • Tabaxi
  • - For the more animalistic Fae-Touched.
  • Leshy
  • - often used for Gifted Names.
  • Deva
  • - often used for Gifted Names.
Dragon Age:
  • Human
  • - If in doubt, just use either an Eladrin name or a Human Name.
  • Qunari
  • - Often used as True Names.
  • Elf
  • - Also used commonly for Eladrin, alongside Fae-Touched.
Final Fantasy:
  • Au Ra
  • - The Xaela names are common, which are Mongolian.
  • Viera
  • - Harengon. The Viera idea of names is also commonly used - Viera tend to choose their own names when they leave their home, usually after things they like. Yes, in Final Fantasy XIV, you could have a lore-compliant Viera called Chocolate Milk. I have a Viera OC who is called Katana.
Random NPC Generator:
Religion + Beliefs: With stories Amice has spread over her time settling Ashfen of besting Vohan, the Liar, to escape the feywild and living freely, worship of Vohan is common. But like a proper polythestic nation, Ashfen tends to worship all gods in their own ways.
However, Mira is also worshipped and given tribute on special days, as well. Due to the influence of the guard who Zendarai has, however, there is a feeling that while they respect the gods, the people of Ashfen do not wish to be conscripted to them. Yappikus/Okul, thus, is also respected. For freedom is one of the most important things to the people.
They tend to carry small trinkets carved with animal symbols of each deity.
Industries:
  • Farming: Both of produce (Chickens, Cows, and Goats mostly) and of food - their main crops are wheat and corn. They transport these goods using their goats - some of which are enchanted and tamed, as Awakened Animals. While they do not often spare the finer foodstuff they have grown, they do sell quite a bit as well.
  • Hired Force: Due to the use of contracts which are enforced by the fair folk, many mercenaries find themselves making their base in Ashfen. After all, to get out of a contract either takes smarts or just doing it.
  • Trading Post: As a small town which is claimed by the faerie contept of fair trades (as per Domains of Delight, the Fey Outlook of Reciprocity), there are people who would come to Ashfen to make sure they're not fucked over. I mean. They can still be messed up, but the land is going to make sure they're not robbed silly.
Guilds:
  • Thieves' Guild: An offshoot of a larger thieves and assassins' guild, run by somebody who decided they didn't like how it worked. Those who work here are mostly Awakened Animals, who can hide they're Awakened Animals. They are also the hand of the law in this land. If you end up causing harm to those of Ashfen (in a way that isn't funny), you'll likely wake up to being followed by a flock of magpies or a very angry frog following you.
  • Storytellers' Guild: Faeries love stories. Love seeing the gaps between truth and fiction. So a tradition of bards and other storytellers have sprung up, and have become an established guild.
  • Mages' Guild: Part historical remnant, part nerdy study place, the Mages' Guild is also where it is most likely to find the seats of government, either Marian studying or Amice playing pranks.
Society and Culture: Those of Ashfen know that they are people who live working with the faeries. Thus, to those outside, they have a few odd habits. For example, it is common for all iron that enters or exits the town to be checked over, to make sure it's not cold iron. They also do not often say thank you, or I'm sorry. Those smart enough to do so often talk in riddles, obscure the meanings of their words. Since those who come to Ashfen can take the protection of the fair folk, there are quite a few noble assassins and other criminals who find themselves settled safely in this place.
Contracts rule promises in Ashfen. After all, they are often enforced by those who linger in the shadows. A land of law and lawlessness in one, a land of contradiction. And a land prime for adventurers to be born.

History

This is a vague outline, of course. Feel free to add whatever you want to this, to fit it into your world more!
  • Old Ashfen was a regular settlement of mages/magic study.
  • Those who settled there hoped to learn the secrets of the universe.
  • Weird Magic Shit happened (around the time that the Ashfen family settled there, so about 600 years ago?)
  • Old Ashfen fell, Amice vanished, Marian survived, the land was left as a crater which was full of Weird Magic. People abandoned it for a long time.
  • Recently, like 30 years ago or back, Amice returned from Feywild. Met with sister, decided to re-settle Ashfen and call it their own.
  • Not many places recognize Ashfen as a nation in general, but it's a nice town that aspires to do more!

Shops

The shop stocks most adventuring tools - items below 5 GP can be expected to be found in-town 100% of the time. The people of Ashfen do not sell animals, explosives, or vehicles - they need these for their own lifestyle, or do not craft them. As for magical items, I will leave those up to you to place. However, they can be sold to Ashfen.

If people wish to use forges or other equipment in Ashfen to help craft mundane items, I can imagine they would need to have a good reputation with the people, and pay a bit of a premium.
